A Welcome from the CEO of ETS to the Participants of the Conference

Dr Yves Beauchamp, Eng., Ph.D., FCAE
École de technologie supérieure
Montréal, Québec, Canada

The École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) is very proud to welcome all the participants to the 38th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2012). Delegates from 65 countries will be attending the conference with their attention focused on industrial and manufacturing theory and applications of electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation and computational intelligence. IECON 2012 will be held concurrently with the 6th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE 2012).

Since you will spend a few days in our university, I would like to introduce you to our engineering school. Established in 1974, ÉTS, which is part of the Université du Québec network, specializes in applied engineering and technology. Ranked 1st among engineering schools in Québec and 4th in Canada based on the total number of Bachelor’s degrees awarded each year, ÉTS focuses on work-study programs and seeks, in particular, to develop new technologies and transfer them to businesses. From the outset, it has maintained a unique partnership with the business community and industry and close ties with big companies and small and medium-sized enterprises. Most of its professors are experts in various engineering fields and have work experience in an industrial environment.

ÉTS is the only engineering school in Québec whose undergraduate engineering programs were specifically created for graduates of college technical programs seeking university training. Our programs are designed as a natural extension of their technical training. The school has over 6,500 students including 1,350 in graduate and doctoral programs. Every year, it welcomes over 1,500 new students in 75 undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. The job placement rate among our Bachelor’s degree graduates hovers around the 100% mark. On average, for each graduate, we receive 8 job offers. For Software Engineering and IT graduates, it’s more like 21 job offers!

ÉTS educates professional engineers and researchers who are renowned for their practical and innovative approach. In the 42 engineering schools and faculties in Canada, ÉTS ranks among the bests, with fifty chairs, research centres and laboratories, to which PDFs and graduate students are associated. This synergy of expertise and experience contributes to scientific progress, higher industrial productivity and quality, as well as the training of a highly qualified workforce. Funding for research and innovation exceeds 20 million dollars, with 75% generated directly by research activities conducted in collaboration with industry.

In conclusion, I want to reiterate that the ÉTS is honoured to welcome you all in its premises, and of course, in our beautiful city of Montreal. I wish all participants a productive and successful conference, great meetings with interesting people and many occasions to develop new scientific collaborations.

Québec and Canada are home of many renowned industries in the fields of, among others, aeronautics, transportation, hydroelectricity, information technology and life science industry, such as pharmaceutics. Your presentations and discussions on the state-of-the-art of industrial electronics and related areas will surely benefit, in the coming years, to many of these companies.

Have a great time in Montréal!
